Where To Start Decorating… Wallpaper, Rugs, Paint?

Published August 15, 2017 Decorating,Design,Inspiration,JP Home,Philosophy No Comments

CONFUSED ON WHERE TO START DECORATING?  ALLOW ME TO EXPLAIN…

A decorating project can be a lot of fun! It’s a great opportunity to be creative, shop for some new things and make an old room feel brand new. It brings a sense of accomplishment and pride. We start out saying, “Yea, I can do that!” And, finish saying, “look at what I did!” 🙌🏼

DIY home decorating is not as simple (or boring) as it used to be. You have access to pretty much all the same resources and inspiration that I do, which is incredible! However, having so many options readily accessible online and in stores can cause some confusion about where to start decorating. Do you start with wallpaper? How about an area rug? Maybe upholstery fabric? A simple paint color?

Over the years, I have been asked this question quite a bit and I have also read about it in magazines and design blogs, as well as discussed it with colleagues (and clients). To be honest, there are a variety of answers out there, and I really don’t think any one of them is right or wrong.

I’m sure that leaves you thinking right now, “great… thanks for the help, Jeffrey.🙄  That didn’t clear up a thing.” Well, I promise that I explain more in the video above and give you specifics as to where to begin this creative process, where NOT to begin, and where I started with decorating my apartment. This video actually builds on what I talked about in a video I shared a couple weeks ago about starting a decorating project with lists and showing you how to draw a floor plan to scale. That video explained where to begin from the practical/technical side, where as this video talks about where to begin from the creative side. 🌈

I hope that this video helps guide you along on your decorating journey. If it does, please be sure to click that “thumbs up” button after watching, share it with someone else who you know is starting a decorating project and don’t’ forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel! Enjoy & happy decorating!

Living Room Furniture Plan

Published August 8, 2017 Decorating,Design,JP Home No Comments

WALK THROUGH MY LIVING ROOM FURNITURE PLAN WITH ME!

I’ve got a plan, friends! I am happy to report that I finally dedicated some time this past week to finish drawing my living room furniture plan – yay!

In case you need a little reminder, I’m in a one-bedroom New York City apartment so it’s not like I have gobs of space to play with or oodles of layout options. The delay in getting this done, as I mentioned last week, is simply that I haven’t had the time to dedicate to this like I hoped. There were definitely a couple layouts bouncing around in my head since I first visited the apartment, and I even had a good idea of the one that would be the winner. However, to confirm the idea I had in my head and to help me determine the size of furniture that would fit, I put my pencil to graph paper and filled in the to-scale floor plan I showed you how to draw in last week’s video.

This initial plan is simple, but it’s critical because it let me know the sizing of several key pieces of furniture for my living room and spurred ideas for some potential shifts to my office setup, which I walk you through in this week’s video. I’m also sharing some important measurements for you keep in mind when creating a furniture plan of your own or simply rearranging the furniture in your home.

Oh, and some other super exciting news…. I found a sofa(!!!)… which I can now purchase because I know the exact size that will fit. I can’t tell you how happy I am that I’m nearing the end of laying on my yoga mat “sofa.” 😁  I’ll be ordering the real sofa this week so its arrival is still several weeks away. However, once it’s here I’ll be sharing all the deets with you, as well as a “how to” and “things to think about” when shopping for a sofa. In the meantime, keep watching for new, fun and helpful videos from me every Tuesday. If you enjoy them don’t forget to click the thumbs up button, share them with someone who you think will also enjoy them and subscribe to my YouTube channel!

IT’S NATIONAL SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE WEEK
WATCH MY #TossItTuesday PLAYLIST FOR INSPO TO SIMPLIFY!

You guys! Did you know that it’s National Simplify Your Life Week? I am slightly embarrassed to say that, despite my passion for simplifying life, I had no idea this week existed! A friend of mine told me about it yesterday and I think I had a simultaneous reaction of my mouth dropping open in shock and bouncing in my seat with excitement! Who knew we could celebrate such a fabulous mission for a week?

I know, you’re probably rolling your eyes as you read this since there are national celebration weeks and days for nearly anything you can think of. 🙄  In fact, just several weeks ago I was posting about National Ice Cream Day (which I must say was a very delicious day 😋 )! Upon some further investigation today, I found a large list of national days we can celebrate or just………………. Some of the upcoming days that you may (or may not) like to know exist are Eat Outside Day, Pluto Demoted Day, World Photo Day, Be an Angel Day, Happiness Happens Day, Lazy Day, and Mail Order Catalog Day. I know… some of these days…. oy! You should see the whole list!

Okay, but seriously… given my love for simplifying life… I really can’t pass up the opportunity to give a shout out to this special week that observes such a positive mission. So in honor of my new favorite week of the year, I’m doing a #throwback on this Thursday to my #TossItTuesday playlist on my YouTube channel. 😁  If you aren’t familiar with what #TossItTuesday is, please take a few moments to watch my video above, which explains one of my favorite days of the week. Then, continue to watch the other videos from over the past year to inspire your mission to simplify your life, as well as give you a little chuckle!

Starting To Decorate & Drawing Floor Plans

Published August 1, 2017 Decorating,Design,JP Home No Comments
WATCH THIS WEEK’S VIDEO TO LEARN ABOUT DRAWING FLOOR PLANS!

People often ask me if my home is super organized and well decorated, or if I’m the cobbler with no shoes. Well, as of right now, I’m officially the cobbler with no shoes. Yes, that’s right my apartment is not the epitome of organization or design right now. I mean, it’s not that bad since the things I have are organized… very organized, actually. 😁  However, it definitely doesn’t accurately represent me or how I typically have things. You may not be surprised by this if you watched the video of my apartment tour from a couple months ago… but, honestly, I was hoping that I would have more done by now.

Since moving into my new apartment life has been go, go, go, go, goooooo! 🏃  Most of which has been good stuff so I’m certainly not complaining (and besides, who wants to listen to a complainer… all our lives are go, go, go, go, goooooo). It’s just left me with little time to focus on one of my joys – nesting! Plus, by committing myself to documenting my process of nesting (a.k.a. how I create and live in an organized home), I definitely ended up slowing down the process… quite a bit. Although, while it may be taking longer, I am enjoying a whole new creative process through creating my videos and having the opportunity to share more tips, ideas and simply more of myself than if I never began this journey. It’s been fun and thanks to you it’s been rewarding as well. I hope that you have also been enjoying the journey so far and that you’re finding some sort of inspiration in the various types of ideas I’m sharing around home and life. 🤗

All that said, the decorating train is finally (slowly) pulling out of the station. In this week’s video, I’m sharing some apartment decorating updates, as well as my ideas on getting started on a decorating project and why drawing floor plans to scale is über important (I’m also going to show you how easy it is to do). Oh, and I have one big change to share with you in the apartment that I think you will agree was an essential aesthetic upgrade. I hope you enjoy this week’s video! If you do, please click the thumb up button and subscribe to my YouTube channel so you never miss a future video… like next week’s, where I’ll be talking about some important measurements you should keep in mind when creating a floor plan, as well as a walk through of the floor plan for my new living room.

Anxiety Update, Tips & Child Mind Institute

Published July 25, 2017 JP Home,Philosophy No Comments

Hey, friends! 👋🏼  Recently, I shared a video where I talked about living with anxiety and how that anxiety flared-up this year with the changes I have had going on in my life… from the ending of my relationship with my partner to moving into my new apartment. It’s been a lot, but I’m making it through 😊  and sincerely appreciate the messages of support and love that I received in response to that video. 🤗  Today, I want to share a little update on the anxiety situation and let you know some of the things that I’ve been doing lately to help manage my anxiety, as well as why I was inspired to discuss this publicly.

As I mentioned in my post several weeks ago, creating and sharing a video on this topic causes a great deal of anxiety (and, to be honest… many of the things I put out in the world do). However, I felt the need to share my original video on anxiety, as well as this one, because I believe it’s an important conversation to have and something that we shouldn’t hide in the dark. It’s nothing to be ashamed of and, as I said before, this thing that can be looked at as a weakness… has also been a strength for me. Now, that doesn’t mean living life with anxiety is easy-peasy. It’s actually quite the contrary because that strength can also be exhausting, scary, overwhelming, depressing, and… indescribable. I feel lucky to be able to say that throughout my life I’ve had a strong drive to fight against the darker parts of anxiety and push forward… toward the light… toward growth…. toward healing.

As you’ll hear more about in this video, I was inspired to open up about this in the spring (Mother’s Day to be exact) when I came across Reese Witherspoon’s Instagram post where she was talking about the Child Mind Institute. I immediately started looking into the organization, began following their #MyYoungerSelf campaign and knew I wanted to get involved. I ended up sending them my original anxiety video and was invited to be part of the expansion of the #MyYoungerSelf campaign, which will feature people from around the world sharing their stories and what they would tell their younger self. I’m incredibly honored to be a part of this campaign but really excited to help keep this conversation going.

Please take a moment to watch this week’s video, check out the Child Mind Institute and join me in this important conversation. Also, please don’t forget… click the thumbs up button if you find this video to be helpful… share it with someone who you think might also enjoy it… and be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel! I’m currently working on a bunch of new organizing and decorating videos as I’m finally starting to work on my apartment some more. I can’t wait to share the transformation process with you!

Living with Anxiety & Starting Over

Published June 20, 2017 JP Home,Philosophy 4 Comments

Hey there, friends! 👋🏼  Before I share this week’s update, I want to take a moment to thank you for watching the videos over the past couple weeks and for all your supportive and encouraging comments on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. They have meant so much to me and I really appreciate you taking the time from your day to hear more about my story and join me on my journey. 😊

As I mentioned several weeks ago, I wanted to kick off my new video series on YouTube by sharing 3 special videos about me, my life and my home. The reason I decided to begin things this way is that despite having successfully been doing this work for almost a decade with clients and various media/brand partners, I haven’t really shared my story with you. I felt that if I’m going to ask you to follow me – to be a friend – that you should know a little bit more about me, why this work is so special to me, as well as why I believe that the work I do and the things I discuss aren’t just about organization and design. They are about a lifestyle. This is all much bigger conversation that extends outside of the spaces where we live into who we are and how we live on a daily basis.

In the first video, I shared my love for home and how my career has really been a lifetime in the making. In the second, I gave an unexpected, but fun house tour and talked about the big changes in my life this year… the ending of my relationship with my partner and moving into my new apartment. Today, in this third video, I’m talking about how anxiety has been a part of my life since I was a child, how it has helped & hindered me throughout my life, as well as helped shape my career. I’m also talking about how my anxiety has affected me recently with the ending of my relationship & starting anew.

This is probably the most personal thing I have ever shared on social media so, as you might expect, it caused a great deal of anxiety to create and share. So, why did I feel the need to do it? Well, because it reinforces growth and because I think we shouldn’t be afraid to talk about things like this. I truly believe that the more we can talk about our humanity & things of this nature, the more we can relate to one another & help one another. There is no reason to be afraid of sharing our true selves and the things we struggle with… they do not equal weakness, and, in fact, can sometimes turn into great strengths. 🙌🏼

I hope you enjoy the video & will join me in the conversation. Also, please don’t forget to click the thumbs up button if you like the video & be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel! I have so many other great videos planned covering topics all around the home, as well as how to bring more balance into our lives and live more mindfully. I can’t wait to share them with you!
