My homemade ice cream from a bag on National Ice Cream Day!

I really love me some ice cream and since yesterday was National Ice Cream Day, I just had to have my favorite sweet treat. To join the celebration in a fun and special way, I decided to go LIVE on Instagram for the very first time while trying to make ice cream in a bag, which is also something I had never, ever done before! I mean, why not try two new things at once, right?

Growing up the only way we made homemade ice cream was with a machine, lots of ice and rock salt. However, I recently discovered some simpler methods that sounded right up my alley. One of the methods (which also seems super easy) requires a mixer, which, unfortunately, I don’t have at this time. However, the most basic method I found only requires some Ziploc bags! So, I dug around the internet a little more to read a few recipes and comments and put together a concoction of my own.

I was really excited to be trying out this easy-peasy recipe and was also looking forward to saving the video so I could share it with you. However, since it was the very first time I went LIVE on Instagram, I missed pressing the “save” link on the videos. 🙄  So, all I have to share with you is the photo above. Total bummer. Mi dispiace. 😕

Regardless of the technical snafu, it was a lot of fun to go LIVE and test out this super simple recipe. I highly recommend having some fun and making ice cream with this method… even if you have an ice cream maker. It’s an old-school change of pace, and, if you have kids, I bet they will have fun with it, too! Give it a whirl sometime this summer and enjoy!

Ice Cream Made in a Bag

Ingredients

  • 1 cup half-and-half
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla (and/or any other flavors or mix-ins you would like)
  • 3 to 4 cups of ice (should fill half of the gallon-size Ziploc bag)
  • 6 tbsp kosher, rock, or sea salt
  • 1 gallon-size Ziploc bag
  • 2 sandwich-size Ziploc bags (for double bagging)

Directions

  1. Combine half-and-half, sugar, vanilla (+ mix-ins) in sandwich bag and zip shut while removing as much air as possible. Place this sealed bag inside the other sandwich bag and seal
  2. Place ice in gallon bag and pour in salt. Mix around to evenly distribute salt
  3. Place ice cream mix bag in the gallon-size bag and seal
  4. Hold the bag with a towel to protect your hands from the cold and shake for 5 to 10 minutes
  5. Once mixture feels firm throughout, remove the sandwich bag from the gallon bag and rinse salt from the bag’s exterior
  6. Serve in a bowl with your favorite toppings, or eat it right out of the bag – enjoy!
