Daylight Savings To-Do’s

Twice a year, at the beginning and end of daylight savings, I take the time to do those certain household chores that we either don’t think about throughout the year, or we put off doing for various reasons.  Today, after you have changed all your clocks and watches, take some time to do these chores to make sure your home is in tip-top shape for the next several months.  If you don’t have time today, set a date for the next two weeks to have these items checked off your to-do list.

  • Mattress – Depending on the type of mattress you have, it is important to flip and/or rotate it 180 degrees to help extend its life and maintain its comfort.  Check the care instructions to see if this is advised for your mattress.
  • Safety – Change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and replace any smoke detectors older than 10 years and carbon monoxide detectors older than five to seven years.
  • Pantry – Remove any expired items from your pantry and make a list of the items that need to be replaced to ensure you are never short ingredients.
  • First Aid – Sort through your first aid kit and medicine cabinet, and make a list of items that need to be replaced due to low quantities or expiration dates.
  • Storm Supplies – Check your emergency preparedness kits to ensure that all items remain fully stocked, that batteries have not expired or leaked, and that all radios and flashlights are in proper working order.  If there are any items missing or items that were partially used during a recent storm, be sure to add them to your shopping list and replace them immediately.  If you do not yet have an emergency kit, here are some helpful resources from the American Red Cross and FEMA to build your own.
  • Wardrobe – Edit your wardrobe to remove any unwanted items and to make room for the new pieces you will be purchasing for the coming season or that you may be rotating out of seasonal storage.

Grid it!

Whether you are traveling across town, or traveling across the country, there always seems to be lots of small gadgets and items to carry.  From lip-balm, to pens, to iPods, to headphones, to chargers… the list goes on and on.  No matter how organized you try to keep things, something always seems to get lost at the bottom of your bag, which inevitably results in you pulling everything out of the bag to find the lone item… until now.

I recently discovered this amazing product by Cocoon Innovations called Grid It.  I think it is one of the most versatile travel items I have ever seen and I think it is an absolute necessity.  It keeps everything from your keys to your camera organized and easily accessible.  The various sizes that it comes in makes it not only handy for your everyday bag, but also for managing all of your power cords while you are on the road and for organizing gaming equipment and tools.

P.S. – It will make for a great gift or stocking-stuffer

A Versatile & Portable Shelving Solution

Here is a new product that I am very excited to try – the iLean.  It is one of the easiest to use and most versatile shelving/storage solutions that I have seen.  The iLean is portable, requires no assembly and seems to have an endless number of uses.  It can be used at home, the office,  outside… even at a tailgating party!  The iLean can transform from shelving, to a desk, to an easel with just a few simple adjustments.  It is great for anyone who is looking for a flexible, semi-permanent solution.

Bye-Bye Messy Kitchen Gadget Drawers

I came across the Axis Expandable Drawer Dividers while I was recently helping a client get settled in her brand new kitchen.  I was dealing with organizing some of the more awkward kitchen tools and gadgets in very wide, shallow drawers.  I considered the usual small bins to break up the drawers for easy compartmentalization, but wanted something that was more versatile and could adapt as the client’s needs changed and as she purchased more gadgets.  This drawer divider proved to be the perfect solution and allows you to create anywhere from two to six compartments of varying sizes so that you can keep things in their place and organized, no matter how many times you open and close the drawer.

Hiding those Unruly Cables and Cords

When it comes to offices, I want nothing more than to hide every single cable coming out of a wall or a computer.  I can’t be happier with the advancements that have been made in recent years with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technology, as the closer we move to a wireless society the more easily I can breathe. 🙂

While I wait for the wires to disappear completely I have found joy in the CableBox created by the folks over at Bluelounge.  The CableBox keeps your unruly cables, surge protectors and power strips out of view and safely tucked away in a fire-retardant plastic box.  You can either store it under your desk, or keep the cleanly designed box of joy out in the open.  No unplugging is required for installation so you can clean-up those cables in less than five minutes.
